Navigating Metro Nashville School Choice Options …
Do you live in Davidson County and want to know more about Metro Nashville Public School options for your school-age children? Metro Nashville Public Schools (“MNPS”) is committed to providing the best education choices possible for Nashville residents and has extended the deadline to apply for optional schools until January 13, 2017. MNPS recognizes that each student is unique and has different needs. Finding the right school to put students on the path to success is a priority and mission of MNPS.
MNPS has zoned and optional schools. Every child in Nashville is zoned for a specific elementary, middle and high school and is guaranteed a seat at that zoned school. Some areas also have zoned options, which give families guaranteed access to more than one school. Proof of residency is required to attend a zoned school.
MNPS also has optional schools which fall into two categories: (1) schools without a zone designed to attract students from all over town, such as a magnet or charter school, and (2) zoned neighborhood schools with available seats. Magnet schools often offer specialized programming and may have entrance requirements. Some charter schools also offer their own application process. If a zoned neighborhood school has available seats, any student in Nashville may apply to fill them. Transportation is provided to middle and high school students to optional schools via the MTA bus system.
Where to start ???
#1 Explore options by visiting school websites at www.schools.mnps.org . You can learn about each school’s offerings, including academics, extracurriculars, aftercare and more.
#2 Visit schools during walk-through Tuesdays and meet teachers and principals, observe classrooms and learn about academic programs. Can’t go on a Tuesday, just contact the school and schedule a time that works better for you. Families are strongly encouraged to tour schools to understand the climate, culture and educational offerings available to students.
#3 Finally, apply by January 13, 2017 using the online application at www.mnpsschoolchoice.org. While paper applications are accepted and can be requested from MNPS by calling (615) 259-4636, online applications are encouraged. Internet access and computers are available at local Nashville Public Library locations. MNPS uses a random selection process to select students with notifications being mailed in the spring and summer.
